1. Total National Parks in India:  105

*As of 2021, there were 105 national parks in India.
*By 1970, India only had five (5) national parks.


2. First National Park of India: 

*India's first national park was established in 1936 as Hailey National Park, now known as Jim Corbett National Park, Uttarakhand.

*It was established to protect the endangered Bengal tiger and was named after hunter and naturalist Edward James Corbett (Jim Corbett).




3. Newest National Park of India: 


Dehing Patkai National Park, Assam

*Dehing Patkai becomes India's newest National Park, In July 2020 Assam government upgraded the status of Dehing Patkai Wildlife Sanctuary into a national park.




4. Area Covered by National Parks: 

40,564.00 km²

*There are 105 existing national parks in India covering an area of 40,564.00 km², which is 1.23% of the geographical area of the country.

*The brow-antlered deer or the dancing deer is found in its natural habitat only at Keibul Lamjao National Park over the floating biomass locally called "Phumdi".

Kaziranga National Park


*The Kaziranga National Park has the highest density of tigers in the world. It is 32.64 tigers per 100 sq.km., highest in any known tiger habitat.
